The Animal as Symbol

An animal beyond the biological is a symbol of what man does to himself and to the natural world.  When I create an animal figure, I draw upon the symbolism that we as humans have imposed on the animals through our domination of nature. The bison, for example, was decimated by the advance of humans toward the western shore. My expression of the bison represents the human condition behind the animal. At the same time, there is a surreal nature and a wonderful component. The animal symbolizes the human condition in its naked form.
